No Elephants Present in Sambisa Forest, Borno Government Confirms
The Borno State government has confirmed that there are no elephants currently residing in the Sambisa forest, following a thorough wildlife survey.
Mr. Ayuba Peter, Director of Forestry and Wildlife in the Ministry of Environment, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the most recent government survey showed that the population of elephants in the forest had been wiped out due to extensive poaching activities.
“Before the Boko Haram insurgency, a herd of elephants could be found in the Sambisa forest, but poaching and habitat destruction have led to their disappearance,” Peter said.
He added that there had been reports of elephants entering Borno State from a neighboring forest in Cameroon through the Gamboru/Ngala and Kala-Balge regions, raising hopes that they might settle in the Sambisa forest. However, the elephants have remained near the border, causing damage to farmlands but not venturing deeper into Sambisa.
The Borno government continues to monitor the situation, though the presence of elephants within Sambisa remains absent.
