FRSC cautions motorists against using worn-out tyres during rainy season
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised motorists to desist from using worn-out tyres during the rainy season to prevent road crashes.
The Sector Commander, FRSC Gombe State Command, Mr Samson Kaura, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Wednesday.
Kaura said that the call became necessary in view of the fact that worn-out tyres during rainy season remained a leading cause of loss of vehicle control which often resulted in accidents.
He said that drivers should prioritise vehicle maintenance before embarking on any journey to avoid crashes which could be fatal.
According to him, using worn-out tyres on the road is highly dangerous as such tyres can lose contact with the road and glide on water.
“The rainy season is here and there are lots of things drivers have to put in place to prevent road crashes.
“They (drivers) should ensure that their tyres are standard, correct, have all the frictions, are well gripped and not worn out as the roads would be wet and slippery.
“Holding the brakes might not be as easy during rainy or wet season unlike during the dry season when it holds firmly.
“Drivers should also ensure that their brakes are functional, their wipers are working, their windscreens are not broken to prevent blurred vision,” he said.
The sector commander also admonished drivers to reduce their speed level as brakes may not function properly during rainy season and it could take longer for a vehicle to stop when brakes are applied.
Kaura urged drivers to approach the rainy season with caution in the interest of their safety and those of their passengers.
He gave the assurance that FRSC personnel in the state would ensure compliance to traffic rules.
