Pope Francis Warns of AI Threats, Stresses Human Connection in Singapore

During a visit to Singapore, Pope Francis cautioned against the societal dangers posed by artificial intelligence (AI), emphasizing the need to prioritize human relationships. Speaking in the high-tech city-state on Thursday, the Pope warned that advancements in AI could risk isolating individuals and trapping them in artificial realities, weakening meaningful human connections.

Instead, the pontiff urged that AI be used to foster solidarity and mutual understanding, underscoring its potential to bring people closer together rather than divide them. He reiterated a similar call from the G7 summit in Italy earlier this year, where he pressed world leaders to regulate AI and prevent its misuse.

Singapore marks the final leg of the 87-year-old pontiff’s 12-day tour, which also included visits to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and East Timor. Later in the day, Pope Francis is expected to lead a mass at a local stadium, with 50,000 attendees anticipated. Although only 176,000 of Singapore’s nearly six million residents are Catholic, the Pope’s visit has garnered widespread interest. He is scheduled to return to Rome on Friday.
