The Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested seven suspects over alleged illegal blasting activities in Akure, the state capital.

The command’s spokesperson, SC Daniel Aidamenbor, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Akure.

According to him, the suspects were apprehended by operatives of the NSCDC Mines and Steel Unit in collaboration with officials of the Federal Ministry of Mines led by Mayowa Omosebi.

Aidamenbor said the suspects, all male residents of Akure from different states, were arrested on Thursday at the Agbogbo area along the Ilesa–Akure–Owo Expressway.

He explained that preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were allegedly involved in illegal blasting operations using explosives without the required permits and authorisation, in violation of mining and explosives regulations.

The NSCDC spokesperson noted that the operation highlighted the growing collaboration between the corps and stakeholders in the mining sector across the state.

He added that the partnership had strengthened intelligence gathering and enabled swift responses to security threats linked to illegal mining and blasting activities.

Aidamenbor reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, stressing that the agency would continue working with other security organisations to curb illegal mining and related crimes in Ondo State.
