Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested a woman identified as Joy for allegedly abducting two infants in a desperate attempt to replace her deceased twins and save her relationship.

The arrest was disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Bright Edafe, while parading the suspect before journalists.

According to Edafe, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect targeted women engaged in petty trading, posing as a customer before allegedly making away with their babies. She reportedly abducted a four-month-old infant from a groundnut seller before stealing another baby from a woman selling ticketing stubs.

During interrogation, Joy confessed to the offences and explained that her actions were driven by fear of losing her partner. She claimed the man had previously left her because of repeated miscarriages.

The suspect said she later gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, but both children died six weeks after birth. Afraid her partner would abandon her again, she allegedly concealed the deaths from him.

Joy told investigators that her partner had already begun preparations for a child dedication ceremony scheduled for Sunday, prompting her to abduct two infants and present them as her own children.

The plan, however, unraveled after the mothers of the abducted babies separately reported the incidents to the police.

Following a coordinated investigation and tracking operation, police operatives located the suspect, rescued the two infants, and reunited them with their families.

The Delta State Police Command confirmed that the babies were recovered safely and that the suspect remains in custody while further legal proceedings continue.
