UN Provides Urgent Aid to Nigerian Flood Victims
UN agencies, led by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), are delivering crucial relief to families affected by severe flooding across Nigeria. The floods, which have impacted 30 of the country’s 36 states, have displaced over 640,000 people, compounding long-standing issues of conflict, food insecurity, and economic hardship.
Arjun Jain, UNHCR’s Representative in Nigeria, stated that entire communities, some of which were beginning to recover from years of violence, are once again uprooted by the flooding. The northeastern city of Maiduguri, particularly hit by the breach of Alau Dam, has seen more than 400,000 people displaced in recent days, leaving half the city submerged.
UNHCR and its partners are providing emergency supplies such as tarpaulins, blankets, and mosquito nets, while also delivering cash assistance to vulnerable families. However, supplies are quickly running out, and urgent international support is needed.
As the World Food Programme (WFP) ramps up food relief efforts, UN agencies warn that the scale of the disaster requires increased funding and swift action to help families recover once the waters recede.
