EFCC Refutes Claims of Yahaya Bello in Custody
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied claims that former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, is in its custody.
In a statement issued by the EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, on Wednesday in Abuja, the commission clarified that Bello has not reported to its office, refuting media reports that suggested otherwise.
“Contrary to circulating reports, Yahaya Bello is not in the holding facility of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),” the statement read. “The former governor remains wanted by the commission, with an active arrest warrant in place.”
Earlier on Wednesday, Mr. Ohiare Michael, Director of the Bello Media Office, had stated that the ex-governor had voluntarily decided to honor the EFCC’s invitation concerning allegations of fraud. According to Michael, Bello’s decision came after consultations with his family, legal team, and political allies.
Bello, known for his respect for the rule of law, reportedly intended to clear his name and prove he has “nothing to hide and nothing to fear.” He was said to have been accompanied by several high-profile Nigerians during his visit to the EFCC Headquarters.
Michael expressed hope that the commission would act professionally and respect the former governor’s fundamental rights throughout the process.
