Nigerian music star Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has added another milestone to his international career after headlining the halftime entertainment at the National Football League’s (NFL) first regular-season game in France.

The Grammy Award-winning singer performed on Sunday at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, Paris, where the Pittsburgh Steelers faced the New Orleans Saints in a landmark fixture that brought American football and global music together.

Burna Boy shared the halftime spotlight with French singer Yseult, as the NFL combined sporting action with live musical performances in a bid to broaden its international appeal and connect with audiences beyond the United States.

For the Nigerian superstar, the performance represented more than another appearance on a global stage. It marked his return to a venue closely associated with one of the defining moments of his career.

In April 2025, Burna Boy made history at the Stade de France by becoming the first African artiste to headline a solo concert at the stadium. The sold-out show attracted approximately 80,000 fans, reinforcing his position among African performers commanding large audiences on the international stage.

His return to the iconic venue for the NFL event further underscored the growing presence of Nigerian music within major global entertainment platforms.

Speaking in an interview with Colleen Wolfe, shared on the official NFL France and NFL Instagram accounts, Burna Boy reflected on the deeper meaning of his music and its ability to connect people across cultural and linguistic boundaries.

The singer described music as a reflection of life, encompassing its good and bad days, emotional highs and lows, triumphs and struggles. For him, songwriting is less about inventing stories than interpreting human experiences and communicating them through melodies.

“That’s what music is. That’s why I’m not so creative; I’m just like a reporter with melodies and stuff. It doesn’t matter where you’re from,” he said.

Explaining his decision to incorporate languages other than English into his songs, Burna Boy said his music was intended to reach people beyond the limitations of spoken language and physical identity.

“That’s why sometimes I don’t even speak English in my music. I sing to see beyond your physical form; it’s your spirit I sing to,” he added.

His remarks reflect an artistic philosophy that has helped distinguish his sound in the international music industry, where Afrobeats has increasingly crossed geographical and linguistic boundaries.

Rather than treating language as a barrier, the singer views music as a universal form of communication capable of connecting people through shared emotions and experiences. That outlook has also informed his broader ambition to introduce African sounds and perspectives to audiences around the world.

The NFL halftime appearance provided another platform for that cultural exchange, placing a Nigerian performer at the centre of an event designed to bring American football to a wider international audience.

The development also highlights the expanding relationship between sport and entertainment, as major sporting organisations increasingly use music performances to attract diverse audiences and create memorable experiences beyond the competition itself.

For Afrobeats, the significance extends beyond a single performance. Nigerian artistes have continued to gain visibility at international festivals, stadium concerts and major entertainment events, contributing to the genre’s growing recognition across different markets.

Burna Boy’s return to the Stade de France, following his record-setting concert there in 2025, offers another illustration of how African performers are occupying increasingly prominent spaces in global entertainment.

As Nigerian music continues to travel across borders, performances such as this reinforce its capacity to represent African creativity on international platforms while connecting audiences through a sound that transcends national and cultural identities.
