Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has been appointed Vice-Chair of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG), marking a significant diplomatic achievement for the country.

The appointment was announced by Dr Magnus Eze, Special Assistant on Communication and New Media to the Minister, in a statement issued in Abuja.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu emerged as Vice-Chair during the group’s meeting held on the sidelines of the 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2026) in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda.

The meeting was attended by King Charles III, Head of the Commonwealth, alongside leaders and representatives of the organisation’s 56 member countries.

According to the statement, the appointment places Nigeria in a strategic leadership position within one of the Commonwealth’s most influential ministerial bodies, strengthening its role in shaping discussions and collective responses to issues of democratic governance, institutional accountability and the protection of fundamental freedoms.

It added that Odumegwu-Ojukwu’s emergence underscores Nigeria’s continued commitment to Commonwealth affairs and its determination to promote dialogue, cooperation and respect for the shared principles of the 56-member organisation.

The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, currently chaired by Malta’s Chris Fearne, is a key mechanism for promoting adherence to the organisation’s fundamental political values, particularly democracy, human rights, good governance and the rule of law.

Established in 1995 under the Millbrook Commonwealth Action Plan, CMAG is mandated to respond to serious violations of the Commonwealth’s shared values, assess political developments in member countries and recommend collective action where necessary.

The group’s vice-chairmanship is rotated among foreign affairs ministers of member states.
