APC’s Monday Okpebholo Wins Edo Governorship Election, INEC Confirms
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Senator Monday Okpebholo, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the Edo State governorship election held on Saturday.
The announcement was made by INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Faruk Kuta, who is also the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna. After collating results from all 18 local government areas, Kuta revealed that Okpebholo secured a total of 291,667 votes, defeating the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who garnered 247,274 votes. The Labour Party (LP) candidate, Mr. Olumide Akpata, came in third with 22,763 votes.
Kuta declared, “Okpebholo Monday of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”
The results showed that the APC won in 11 local government areas, while the PDP claimed victory in seven.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Okpebholo, the governor-elect, is currently serving as a senator representing Edo Central at the National Assembly.
Meanwhile, the PDP agent at the collation center, Mr. Osaigbovo Iyhoa, raised concerns about the results, alleging widespread irregularities across several local government areas. Iyhoa disclosed that the PDP had submitted a petition to INEC, requesting the suspension of the announcement pending the resolution of the issues raised.
