Russian Airstrike Injures 16 in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhya, Buildings Damaged

Sixteen people were injured following a Russian airstrike on the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhya on Monday morning, according to local authorities.

Ukrainian media reported that this was the first time the city had been hit with glide bombs, which caused extensive damage to 13 residential buildings, two kindergartens, and several cars, as confirmed by Ukrainian police.

Zaporizhzhya is situated about 60 kilometers from the nuclear power plant currently under Russian military control. Glide bombs, dropped by Russian fighter jets, are guided over distances of dozens of kilometers and carry several hundred kilograms of explosives, causing significant destruction in cities like Kharkiv.

In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is seeking permission to deploy Western weapons against Russian airbases near the front lines. However, Kiev’s strongest allies remain cautious to avoid escalating tensions with Russia.

President Zelensky, currently in the United States, plans to present a “Victory Plan” to allies, meeting with President Joe Biden and presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. He will also address the UN Security Council and General Assembly to garner support for Ukraine’s defense efforts.
