U.S. Proposes Ban on Import of Connected Vehicles from China, Russia
The U.S. government has proposed a new rule to ban the sale and import of connected vehicles and related components from China and Russia, citing potential national security risks.
The White House announced the proposal in a press release on Monday, stating that the Department of Commerce is issuing a notice of proposed rulemaking that, if finalized, would prohibit the sale or import of connected vehicles incorporating specific technologies.
According to the press release, the proposed rule specifically targets the import of certain components from countries of concern, namely China and Russia.
The restrictions on software originating from China and Russia are set to take effect in 2027, while the hardware prohibitions are scheduled for 2030, as outlined in the release.
