Dozens Feared Dead as Migrant Boats Capsize off Djibouti Coast

1 25

Two migrant boats carrying a total of 310 passengers capsized off the coast of Djibouti, leaving dozens feared dead, according to the United Nations.

The UN’s International Organisation for Migration (IOM) reported via social media platform X on Tuesday that at least 45 people have been confirmed dead, while 32 have been rescued so far. Rescue efforts are ongoing, and the IOM is assisting Djibouti authorities in the operation.

The boats had departed from Yemen, where many migrants from Ethiopia and Somalia often embark on perilous journeys, hoping to reach Saudi Arabia or other Gulf states for work opportunities. However, many face poor and dangerous conditions in Yemen and frequently attempt to return, leading to tragic incidents such as this. Further details are yet to be released as rescue work continues.
