Ethiopia’s parliament, consisting of two houses, appointed Foreign Minister Taye Atske Selassie as the country’s new president on Monday, marking a significant leadership transition.

Selassie succeeds Sahle-Work Zewde, whose recent social media activity had fueled speculation about her potential resignation.

Last week, Sahle-Work shared a cryptic tweet quoting a line from Mahmoud Ahmed’s song “Silence is My Answer,” sparking widespread discussion.

She wrote, “When a person feels sad and broken, when he has got no place to go, hope is his only hope.” The emotional tone of the message, along with reports suggesting she might step down, intensified rumors about her future.

Sahle-Work faced growing public criticism for her perceived lack of response to the ongoing conflicts in various parts of Ethiopia, contributing to the speculation surrounding her resignation.
