Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has confirmed that Nigerian musician Speed Darlington is currently in police custody in Abuja.

According to Adeyanju, the artist was arrested after a petition was filed by fellow musician Burna Boy.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Adeyanju criticized Burna Boy for what he described as hypocrisy, pointing out the contradiction in Burna Boy’s stance against oppression while allegedly instigating the arrest of a fellow artist.

“We just spent the last 30 minutes with Speed Darlington, who detailed how he was arrested in Lagos last Friday, transferred around, and finally brought to Abuja, where he has been detained since. The petition against him was filed by Burna Boy,” Adeyanju revealed.

He continued, “You can’t sing against oppressors and still be an oppressor. We are now fully involved in the Speed Darlington case and will take all necessary steps to secure his release.

No one should be detained by the police for voicing their opinions. We urge the authorities to uphold freedom of speech in Nigeria.”

Speed Darlington had recently garnered social media attention after weighing in on the legal controversies surrounding American music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs.
