Russia, Burkina Faso Discuss Expanding Military Cooperation

1 2

Russia’s Defence Minister, Andrei Belousov, and Burkina Faso’s Prime Minister, Apollinaire J. Kyelem de Tambela, held talks in Moscow on Tuesday, October 9, 2024, to discuss strengthening military ties, according to a statement from Russia’s defence ministry.

The meeting is part of Russia’s broader strategy to deepen its military, diplomatic, and economic engagements in Africa, particularly as it vies with the West for influence following its war in Ukraine. Burkina Faso, led by a military government since the 2022 coup, has been receiving military support from Russia, including supplies and instructors to combat terrorism.

Despite declining arms exports to sub-Saharan Africa in recent years, Russia remains the region’s second-largest arms supplier and has signed military agreements with 40 African nations. Both countries emphasized mutual respect and shared interests in their evolving relationship.
