Mr. Ndubuisi Agabus, the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Keffi Area Commander, has called for the inclusion of mental health counsellors in workplaces to address growing mental health issues among employees.
Speaking at the 2024 World Mental Health Day event in Keffi, Nasarawa State, Agabus highlighted the rising mental health challenges in workplaces, attributing them to the absence of counsellors who can help workers manage the pressures they face.
The event, organized by Ruth Forth Ltd., aligned with this year’s World Mental Health Day theme: “It is Time to Prioritise Mental Health in the Workplace.”
Agabus stressed that workplace pressures, coupled with personal challenges, often drive workers to substance abuse as a coping mechanism.
He emphasized the need for every organization to have a counsellor who can support employees in managing their mental health without turning to drugs. “The role of a counsellor is crucial in guiding workers through difficult situations, ensuring they don’t resort to substance abuse as a solution,” he said.
John Simon, Managing Director of Ruth Forth Ltd., echoed these concerns, noting that overburden and dissatisfaction with work policies contribute to mental health crises in workplaces.
He called on employers to prioritize mental health, not only for their workers but also for themselves.
Simon added that more collaboration with the NDLEA could help promote healthy practices and reduce workplace-related stress that leads to drug use. Ruth Forth Ltd. offers human resource services, consulting, and psychological support for businesses across Nigeria.
