During a rally in Aurora, Colorado, Donald Trump intensified his anti-immigration stance, calling for the death penalty for migrants who kill American citizens or law enforcement officers.
Speaking in front of posters featuring alleged members of the Venezuelan gang “Tren de Aragua,” Trump announced his plan to launch “Operation Aurora” to target such gangs if he wins the upcoming election.
The U.S. Republican presidential candidate, who is seeking to defeat Democratic rival Kamala Harris in the November 5 election, has hardened his rhetoric on immigration in recent weeks.
“I’m hereby calling for the death penalty for any migrant that kills an American citizen or a law enforcement officer,” Trump declared, drawing loud cheers from the crowd.
Trump has also proposed expanding the use of the death penalty for other serious crimes, including sex trafficking involving women and children. While the federal death penalty exists, it is rarely enforced.
Expanding its use would require legislative approval from Congress, according to the Death Penalty Information Center, a non-profit organization.
