Mrs. Chiwendu Nwadi has filed a petition against her husband, Emeka Nwadi, accusing him of deliberately poisoning her drink, which resulted in the loss of her pregnancy. The allegations were made during proceedings at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Customary Court in Ushafa, Bwari Area Council.

In her petition, represented by her lawyer, Mr. Moses Ibe, Mrs. Nwadi seeks the dissolution of her 13-year marriage, claiming the union has “broken down irretrievably.” The court has scheduled the next hearing for November 5, pending the respondent’s appearance.

The couple, who wed in 2011 under Native Law and Custom, share three children aged 12, 11, and 2. Mrs. Nwadi described her husband as “a man of unimaginable violence and cruelty, fetish, a serial wife beater, and adulterer.”

She recounted that after the birth of their second child, her husband expressed disinterest in having more children. However, after becoming pregnant again seven years later, she alleged he poisoned her drink, leading to her pregnancy loss.

Mrs. Nwadi also revealed that when she became pregnant again during the COVID-19 pandemic, her husband accused her of infidelity and subsequently threw her out of their home. She claimed that after she returned to her parents’ house, elders from her husband’s village intervened, leading to an agreement for a DNA test after she gave birth. She noted that the child resembled her husband, but he still threatened her with paternity tests.

She further detailed instances of physical abuse and psychological trauma throughout their marriage, including a recent threat from her husband, who accused her family of causing his misfortunes through witchcraft.

Currently, Mrs. Nwadi reports having no access to her children, as her husband has obtained a court order preventing her from communicating with them. She expressed concern for their welfare, alleging that her husband has since brought a 24-year-old woman into their home, who has been mistreating the children.

In her petition, she seeks not only the dissolution of the marriage but also custody of their three children, financial support of N1 million monthly for their maintenance, and an order for her husband to return her personal belongings. The respondent has yet to file a defense or appear in court.
