Tension Rises as ASUP’s 15-Day Ultimatum to FG Nears Expiration

The Federal Government’s failure to address the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has sparked concerns among students and lecturers, with a potential strike looming.

ASUP had previously issued a 15-day ultimatum to the government, urging it to resolve issues surrounding the new scheme of service for polytechnic lecturers nationwide.

The deadline is set to expire by midnight on Wednesday, October 23, and the union has signaled plans to commence a strike if no action is taken by the government.

ASUP’s Zone D Coordinator, Iloma Richard, expressed disappointment over the lack of progress. He reminded the public that the union had suspended its previous strike action on July 22, hoping the government would engage in meaningful dialogue with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

“Unfortunately, no progress has been made due to NBTE’s reluctance,” Richard said, adding that the union is prepared to mobilize its members if the government fails to act before the deadline.
