The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced that Blue Line train services will resume Sunday morning following a fire incident that temporarily disrupted operations on Saturday.

Kolawole Ojelabi, Head of Corporate Communication at LAMATA, confirmed the incident, stating that a spark-induced fire occurred near the old NEPA Station by Eko Bridge in the Apongbon area of Lagos Island, leading to the suspension of passenger services.

“Upon detecting the spark, the system isolated the affected section, allowing engineers from the independent power plant that supplies electricity to the train to investigate the source,” Ojelabi noted. Closed-circuit cameras in the area quickly alerted emergency teams, who initiated response protocols.

No passengers or LAMATA staff were harmed during the incident. Engineers are currently working to replace damaged cables, ensuring the safety of the Blue Line, which holds the distinction of being West Africa’s first electric-powered rail system.

LAMATA reiterated its commitment to safe and reliable train operations for Lagos commuters.
