Israeli Parliament Bans UNRWA Operations Amid International Concerns

1 2

The Israeli parliament, known as the Knesset, has enacted a law barring the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) from conducting operations within Israeli territory. The legislation, supported by 92 of the 120 parliament members, was approved despite objections from the United States and several European nations.

The new law explicitly prohibits UNRWA from establishing offices, providing services, or engaging in activities within Israel, whether directly or indirectly. Lawmakers advocating the bill cited alleged involvement of UNRWA personnel in actions deemed supportive of terrorism against Israel, arguing for the agency’s exclusion as a security measure.

UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini expressed deep concern over the decision, calling it an “unprecedented move” that “sets a dangerous precedent” and contravenes the UN Charter and Israel’s obligations under international law. In a statement on X, Lazzarini warned that the legislation could exacerbate the hardships of Palestinian communities, particularly in Gaza, where residents have endured escalating difficulties over the past year.
