Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has been arraigned before the Chief Magistrate Court in Kuje, Abuja, over an alleged assault on a Bolt driver at his residence.
The lawmaker, representing Aba North and South in Abia State, was brought to court by the Inspector General of Police’s Special Investigation Unit after a video surfaced showing him allegedly assaulting the driver. Ikwechegh pleaded not guilty to charges of abuse of office, assault, and threat to life.
Presiding Judge Abubakar Umar Sai’id granted Ikwechegh bail set at N500,000, with the case adjourned to November 8.
The Nigerian Police Force’s PRO, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the development on social media, stating, “RULE OF LAW: POLICE PROSECUTES HON ALEXANDER IKWEGHE FOR ASSAULT… Details soon.”
Ikwechegh, who was seen in the video reprimanding and slapping the driver, later issued a public apology following public backlash.
