Guinea Bissau’s President Suspends November Elections Amid Political Turmoil

0 2

Guinea Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embalo has indefinitely postponed the legislative elections originally scheduled for November 24, further deepening the country’s political uncertainty. The announcement was made on Monday, marking another delay since the dissolution of parliament in December 2023.

The November election date had been set following an alleged coup attempt and armed clashes just before parliament was dissolved. Indications of a possible delay surfaced last week, with Territorial Administration Minister Aristides Ocante da Silva warning that logistical and financial challenges might prevent the election from proceeding.

President Embalo signaled the delay on Saturday, and on Monday, his political adviser, Fernando Delfim da Silva, confirmed the decision, stating that Embalo had officially canceled the previous decree establishing the November election date. A new date has yet to be announced, as the nation grapples with ongoing instability and financial constraints.
