A 40-year-old man, Adebayo Jemileyin, on Friday appeared before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, for allegedly obtaining N16.5 million under false pretences.
The defendant of undisclosed address, was charged with two counts of obtaining by false pretences and stealing.
The police prosecutor, Cpl. Akeem Akinloye, told the court that between Jan. 31 and March 31, at Oluyole area of Ibadan, the defendant fraudulently obtained the sum of N16.5 million from one Sunday Idowu.
Akinloye said the defendant obtained the said sum from the complainant under the pretext of purchasing 20 used Toyota Camry Cars from America which he knew to be false.
He said the defendant allegedly stole the money from Idowu and fraudulently converted it to his own use.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 390 (9) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Defence Counsel, Mr Ola Olaniyi, asked the court to admit his client to bail on the most liberal terms.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Olabisi Ogunkanmi, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of five million naira with two sureties in like sum.
Ogunkanmi, thereafter, adjourned the case until April 2, 2025 for hearing.
