Peter Obi Urges FG to Secure Borders, Fight Trafficking

The Federal Government has been urged to focus its investments on human capital development as a reliable measure to combat human trafficking in the country.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, emphasized the need to intensify efforts to close porous borders, which are a major driver of trafficking.

In a statement on his verified X handle on Tuesday, Obi highlighted the importance of prioritizing education and health to combat trafficking effectively. He stated, “The government must take decisive actions against this societal issue by investing in human development through education, health, and poverty reduction. This will enhance the quality of life, help people understand their rights, and provide better opportunities.”

Obi’s remarks were made in commemoration of the World Day against Trafficking in Persons, underscoring the need to eliminate all forms of violence and exploitation against women and girls. He referenced the 2024 Trafficking in Persons Report by the U.S. Department of State, which classified Nigeria as a Tier 2 country, and the 2023 Global Slavery Index Report, ranking Nigeria 38th among 160 countries with the highest number of slaves.

Citing statistics from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Obi noted that 61 percent of human trafficking in Nigeria occurs internally, while 39 percent is due to cross-border trafficking. He attributed the high levels of human trafficking to insecurity, poverty, unemployment, and porous borders.

Obi reaffirmed his commitment to building a nation where citizens can live and succeed without enslavement.
