Eniola Shokunbi, a 12-year-old Nigerian student, has earned widespread acclaim for inventing a groundbreaking air purifier capable of removing 99% of airborne viruses.
Her innovation, developed as part of a school assignment, has secured ₦19.4 billion ($11.5 million) in funding from the Connecticut State Bond Commission for large-scale production in schools.
Eniola, a fifth-grader at Commodore MacDonough STEM Academy, was tasked with creating a solution to combat airborne pandemics. She designed a low-cost, highly effective air purifier, which was rigorously tested by the University of Connecticut and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Both institutions confirmed the device’s remarkable efficacy.
How the Device Works
Explaining the functionality of her $60 (₦101,000) air purifier, Eniola said:
“The air goes through all the sides and comes out of the top, so it filters in and out.”
Eniola emphasized the importance of supporting science-driven solutions. “A lot of people don’t realize that the only thing standing between them and getting sick is science,” she remarked. On her website, she expressed her vision to expand the initiative globally, ensuring every classroom benefits from cleaner air.
Nigerian Engineer Comments on Innovation Challenges
Reacting to Eniola’s achievement, Nigerian engineer Ziko Abara highlighted the challenges faced by innovators in Nigeria. He noted that limited funding and lack of support often hinder progress.
“Who cares about air quality development in Nigeria? Talk more about funding such an idea… It’s in places actively fighting climate change that her work will thrive,” Ziko said.
Drawing from his own experience developing a jet engine, Ziko added:
“Funding and an enabling environment are critical. Many creators in Nigeria work with paper and cartons because they lack resources. Universities should open their facilities to young innovators.”
