The French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier, has emphasized France’s dedication to fostering a partnership rooted in mutual respect with Nigeria, dismissing claims about establishing a military base or exploiting Nigeria’s solid minerals.

Speaking at a music event marking the conclusion of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, Fonbaustier highlighted France’s non-impositional approach to international relations, while commending the growing bilateral ties between the two nations.

The event featured performances by Nigerian artist Morell, who created a special Hausa song, and a documentary screening by the Anti-Sexual Violence Lead Support Initiative (ASVIOL). These creative elements underscored the campaign’s mission to raise awareness about gender-based violence and inspire collective action.

The French Embassy collaborated with Nigerian civil society organizations to implement over 13 projects across 11 states. These initiatives reached more than 600 individuals through workshops, debates, and educational games, according to Fonbaustier.

He praised survivors of gender-based violence as beacons of courage, urging society to honor their resilience and amplify their voices as catalysts for change.

“Art transcends cultural boundaries,” Fonbaustier noted, applauding the use of music and film as advocacy tools. “It unites communities in a shared commitment to ending violence.”

The Ambassador called for sustained efforts beyond the 16 Days campaign, emphasizing the importance of continuous dialogue and collective action.

In a media interaction, Fonbaustier dispelled rumors about France’s alleged plans to establish a military base in Nigeria.

“France has no intention of establishing military bases or maintaining permanent foreign military presence in Nigeria,” he stated, referencing clarifications made by Nigeria’s Ministry of Defence.

Fonbaustier acknowledged existing misconceptions and emphasized France’s respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty, adding, “We listen to what Nigeria needs and seek to build partnerships, not impose solutions.”

The Ambassador also addressed concerns about France’s role in Nigeria’s solid minerals sector. He clarified that a recent memorandum of understanding between both nations focuses solely on technical assistance to help Nigeria optimize its resources, with no plans for direct exploitation by French entities.

On economic collaboration, Fonbaustier highlighted the potential for increased business ties, particularly in training, agriculture, technology, and the arts. He noted the significant contributions of over 100 French companies operating in Nigeria, creating 16,000 direct jobs and 100,000 indirect jobs.

“Respectful cooperation is our guiding principle,” Fonbaustier reiterated, expressing optimism about deepening economic and cultural exchanges between France and Nigeria.
