Moroccan King Invites Macron After Western Sahara Support

King Mohammed VI invited French President Emmanuel Macron for an official visit following France’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.

In a letter, King Mohammed VI welcomed Paris’s “clear support for Morocco’s sovereignty over this part of its territory.” This support stems from a letter Macron sent on Tuesday, recognizing Morocco’s autonomy plan as the “only basis” for a political solution to the conflict and affirming the territory’s future within Moroccan sovereignty.

The Western Sahara dispute, ongoing since 1975, involves Morocco and the Algeria-backed Polisario Front, which seeks independence for the region. Macron’s support has led to condemnation from both the Polisario and Algeria, with Algeria recalling its ambassador to Paris in response.

King Mohammed VI emphasized that France and Morocco will collaborate on a solution that respects Moroccan sovereignty, aiming to strengthen their partnership in strategic sectors.
