The death toll from Cyclone Chido, which struck Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado, Nampula, and Niassa provinces on Sunday, has risen to 45, with nearly 500 reported injuries, according to official updates.

President Filipe Nyusi extended his condolences to the families of the victims and assured that the government is working tirelessly to provide support to those affected. “We are mobilized to ensure that all necessary assistance is provided,” he stated on social media, adding that assessment teams have been dispatched to coordinate relief efforts.

The cyclone has left widespread devastation in its wake, with 23,931 houses destroyed, 48 health units damaged, and 35,689 families impacted. Critical infrastructure and property have also suffered significant damage.

In response, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced a $4 million contribution to bolster Mozambique’s emergency response. Additionally, World Vision Mozambique has pledged $1.2 million in aid to support 75,000 affected individuals, focusing primarily on children.

The disaster highlights the urgent need for humanitarian support and infrastructure resilience in Mozambique as the country grapples with the aftermath of Cyclone Chido.
