Freezing Rain Causes Travel Disruptions in Southwestern Germany

0 44

Freezing rain wreaked havoc on transportation in southwestern Germany on Wednesday, with over 120 traffic accidents reported across Baden-Württemberg, according to local police.

The icy conditions caused several injuries, prompting police to issue warnings urging drivers to reduce speed and avoid sudden braking.

“These conditions are far less forgiving,” said a police spokesperson from the town of Aalen, emphasizing the need for extra caution on the roads.

The freezing rain also disrupted air travel at Stuttgart Airport, where the runway was temporarily closed for de-icing operations. This led to significant delays in flight schedules, an airport spokesperson confirmed.

Two inbound flights were diverted due to the icy runway conditions. One aircraft landed in Nuremberg, while the other was redirected to an airport near Karlsruhe.

Authorities are advising travelers to monitor weather updates and exercise patience as efforts continue to manage the adverse weather conditions.
