The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has awarded a N500,000 scholarship to Mariam Olayiwola, a first-year Physiology student at Lagos State University (LASU). The award, part of the COAS Special Scholarship Scheme for Indigent Students, was initiated in 2024 by the late COAS, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.

Maj.-Gen. Farouk Mijinyawa, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division, Nigerian Army, announced the scholarship in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos.

According to Mijinyawa, the scholarship aims to support deserving students like Mariam in pursuing their academic aspirations. He presented the scholarship cheque to the beneficiary on behalf of the COAS, congratulating her for her dedication and achievements.

“I encourage you to continue to work hard for more accolades. Your performance will serve as an inspiration to your peers and siblings,” he said.

The GOC emphasized the Nigerian Army’s commitment to community welfare and its efforts to provide opportunities for talented young Nigerians. He noted that the scholarship would cover Mariam’s tuition fees and other expenses, easing the financial burden on her family.

The late Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja initiated the scholarship programme to promote educational development and contribute positively to society. The scheme underscores the Nigerian Army’s dedication to empowering the next generation through education.
