US House Passes Forestry Bill as Wildfires Devastate Los Angeles

Amid ongoing wildfires ravaging the Los Angeles area, the U.S. House of Representatives has passed the Fix Our Forests Act, a bipartisan bill designed to mitigate future wildfire risks through improved forest management.

The legislation, co-sponsored by House Natural Resources Chairman Bruce Westerman and Representative Scott Peters, passed with a 279-141 vote on Thursday.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise emphasized the need for proactive measures, stating, “This commonsense bill will protect communities and restore forests. It forces state leaders to prioritize effective forest management rather than a leftist climate agenda.”

The bill’s passage comes as Los Angeles battles a series of devastating wildfires that began earlier this month. The Palisades Fire, which struck the Pacific Palisades coastal community, claimed 11 lives, while the Eaton Fire ravaged the foothill city of Altadena, resulting in 17 fatalities. The destruction has displaced countless residents and caused widespread devastation in affected areas.

The Fix Our Forests Act aims to address wildfire risks by promoting sustainable forestry practices and encouraging collaboration between federal and state agencies. The bill’s proponents argue that better forest management can prevent future tragedies and protect vulnerable communities.

As wildfires continue to challenge emergency services and displace residents, the legislation represents a critical step toward enhancing preparedness and mitigating future risks.
