The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) has launched a cost-cutting drive following U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend humanitarian aid, creating financial uncertainty for the organization.
A UNHCR spokeswoman confirmed on Wednesday that precautionary measures were being implemented while the agency assesses the full impact of the aid freeze. “We are still evaluating the decision, including possible exceptions, but have taken temporary steps to mitigate the funding uncertainty,” she said.
According to The Guardian, UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi has instructed staff to pause recruitment and international travel, as well as suspend non-essential supply orders, except for emergency assistance. However, the agency declined to comment on the internal directive.
The United States accounts for nearly 20% of UNHCR’s budget and contributed over $2 billion in 2024. The sudden aid suspension has sparked confusion in Washington and globally, as officials attempt to clarify which programs are affected.
