The Katsina State Government has confirmed that Abdulsalam Rabiu-Faskari, winner of the National Qur’anic Recitation Competition, along with his father and brother, are still alive but remain in the custody of their abductors.
The state’s Commissioner for Information and Culture, Dr. Bala Salisu-Zango, made this known in a statement on Friday, debunking reports that Rabiu-Faskari had been killed.
The victims were abducted two days ago while traveling from Katsina to Faskari after being honored by Governor Dikko Radda for his outstanding performance at the competition in Kebbi. Rabiu-Faskari is set to represent Nigeria at the upcoming international Qur’anic recitation competition.
Salisu-Zango stated that the government was aware of media reports suggesting the reciter had been killed but clarified that intelligence indicated he and his family were alive and in good health.
“As of Friday, the abductors have demanded a ransom of N30 million from the family,” he added.
Governor Radda condemned the kidnapping as “unfortunate” and assured the public that efforts were underway to secure the victims’ release.
“My heart is with the victims, their family, and friends. We will take concrete action to ensure their safe return,” Radda said.
He also urged security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the abductees and reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling security challenges in the state.
