Tetsuya Yamagami, the man convicted of assassinating former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, has filed an appeal against his life sentence, local media reported on Wednesday.

According to Kyodo News Agency, the 45-year-old submitted the appeal to the Osaka High Court, seeking to overturn the ruling handed down by the Nara District Court last month.

Yamagami admitted to shooting Abe with a homemade firearm during a campaign speech in the city of Nara in July 2022, an attack that shocked Japan and the international community.

The court found him guilty of murder, as well as the illegal possession and discharge of a firearm, and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Details of the grounds for the appeal were not immediately disclosed.
