Abuja Court Restricts Protesters to MKO Abiola Stadium

Justice Sylvanus Oriji of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has limited the August 1 demonstration to the MKO Abiola Stadium. The ruling came on Wednesday following an ex-parte application by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, seeking to confine the protest to the stadium.

Minister Wike, represented by counsel Ogwu Onoja, requested an interim injunction to prevent the protest leaders from assembling on any roadways, streets, offices, or public premises in Abuja from August 1 to 10. He expressed concerns about potential security threats and the inability of security agencies to manage a crisis.

Justice Oriji acknowledged the protesters’ rights but emphasized the need to protect public order and property. Consequently, he ordered the protest to be confined to the stadium. Defendants in the suit include Omoyele Sowore, Damilare Adenola, Adama Ukpabi, Tosin Harsogba, and various security chiefs.
