As the world marks the 2024 edition of Universal Children’s Day, the African Children and Youth Theatre Arena (ACYTA) has reaffirmed its commitment to the theme “Inclusion for All Children,” emphasising the need for every child to feel valued, heard, and celebrated regardless of their background, ability, or circumstances.
In a statement signed by Om’Oba Jerry Adesewo, Co-Chair of ACYTA, the organisation highlighted its role in creating inclusive spaces where children can thrive, particularly within the theatre and performing arts.
Adesewo stressed that theatre has the unique power to foster empathy, break down barriers, and provide a platform for the diverse voices of young audiences.
“Through our storytelling, performances, and programmes, ACYTA is dedicated to ensuring that no child is left behind,” he said.
Adesewo also drew attention to the ongoing ’16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence,’ emphasising the organisation’s commitment to safeguarding children from all forms of violence, abuse, and discrimination.
“Our theatres and programmes are safe spaces where children can explore, express, and find solace,” he added, calling on communities, governments, and organisations to work collaboratively to create nurturing environments for children.
ACYTA, the regional network of the International Association of Children and Young Audiences (ASSITEJ), further urged African governments to recognise the arts as an essential tool for child development. Adesewo noted that theatre and the arts help children understand themselves and the world around them, fostering resilience, confidence, and critical thinking.
“By supporting and funding arts programmes, African nations can create safe, enriching spaces where children can develop their full potential,” he stated, emphasising that such investments are crucial for the future of the continent.
On his part, Lalu Mokuku, Vice President, ASSITEJ International, said “Inclusivity is an important theme that echoes the ideals that ASSITEJ all over the worlds stands for.”
