The Adamawa State Government has confirmed the deaths of eight individuals in what is believed to be an outbreak of Buruli ulcer in Malabu, a community in Fufore Local Government Area.

State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Hon. Felix Tangwami, announced the development in Yola, calling the situation “deeply concerning.”

Tangwami revealed that clinical samples from affected individuals have been sent to the National Reference Laboratory for confirmation of the disease. In the meantime, the community remains under close surveillance by health authorities to prevent further spread.

“Some of the surviving patients are currently receiving specialised care at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH) in Yola,” the commissioner said. “Our medical teams are working around the clock to stabilise them.”

He added that the Adamawa State Government is working in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO), and other development partners to contain the suspected outbreak and mitigate its impact on the community.

Residents are being urged to remain calm but vigilant, and to report any suspicious skin lesions or symptoms to the nearest health facility promptly.
