As part of ongoing efforts to modernize the transportation sector and cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal, the Adamawa State Government will inaugurate its first Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) filling and vehicle conversion station on May 29.
Mrs. Wumfe Anthony, the state Commissioner for Transportation, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Yola. She described the project as a significant milestone in the transport reform initiatives championed by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.
Anthony noted that the CNG station, developed in collaboration with private sector partners, marks the first of its kind in Adamawa. According to her, the facility is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at offering cleaner and more affordable transportation options for residents.
“As we approach Democracy Day, this landmark project speaks to Gov. Fintiri’s commitment to delivering the dividends of democracy through transformative infrastructure,” Anthony said. “The CNG station will drastically reduce pollution and vehicle operating costs.”
With the inauguration slated for next week, the state government is currently finalizing arrangements with the transport union to ensure immediate benefits for commuters in the form of reduced fares.
“We are working closely with stakeholders to ensure the people of Adamawa benefit directly, through a reduction in transport fares,” the commissioner explained.
She added that the government had already deployed 19 luxurious buses on various routes across the state at subsidized rates. Some of the buses, she noted, have also been allocated to schools to ease the burden of transportation for students.
Looking ahead, Anthony expressed optimism that the 2026 state budget would make room for additional investments in the transport sector, aimed at consolidating gains made and further easing economic pressures on citizens.
She urged residents to embrace the CNG vehicle conversion initiative, stressing that while the initial cost may appear high, the long-term benefits in terms of fuel savings and environmental impact make it a worthwhile transition.
“This administration has shown that with purposeful leadership, even critical sectors like transport can be revitalised to better serve the people,” Anthony said.
She added that the project reflects Governor Fintiri’s broader vision of modernizing public infrastructure and promoting sustainable governance throughout the state.
