In October 2024, South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs alleged that an investigation uncovered prima facie evidence that Adetshina’s mother may have committed fraud and identity theft. The department subsequently revoked both Adetshina and her mother’s identity documents and travel papers, citing their failure to justify why their documents should not be canceled.
The controversy led to a wave of xenophobic attacks against Adetshina, with critics questioning her South African identity. As backlash mounted, she withdrew from the Miss South Africa competition.
