Akwa Ibom Plans to Boost Tourism by Honoring Mary Slessor’s Legacy

The Akwa Ibom State Government has announced its intention to promote the legacies of the Scottish missionary Mary Slessor as part of its efforts to enhance tourism in the state.

Mr. Charles Udoh, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, made this known on Friday during a meeting in Uyo with Rev. Ini Ukpuho, Chairman of the Mary Slessor Foundation.

Mary Slessor, a Scottish missionary who lived among the Efik people of Nigeria, is celebrated for her role in ending the practice of killing twins.

The reports gathered that her contributions will be highlighted as part of the state’s tourism development strategy.

Udoh revealed plans to develop a site dedicated to Slessor’s memory, which is expected to attract tourists and boost the state’s revenue. “Tourism is a major revenue earner globally. The Akwa Ibom Government will explore all possibilities to enhance tourism in the state,” Udoh said. “One of our initiatives is to establish a festival of twins to commemorate the work of the Scottish Presbyterian missionary who saved the lives of countless twins.”

Rev. Ukpuho explained that the visit aligns with Gov. Umo Eno’s request for the Presbyterian Church to collaborate with the state in preserving and promoting Slessor’s legacy. Ukpuho, who also serves as the Coordinating Chaplain of the National Christian Center in Abuja, assured the state of his support in providing necessary information and artifacts to facilitate this partnership.

“This collaboration will enhance the promotion, marketing, and display of Mary Slessor’s legacies as a significant tourism attraction,” he added.
