Albanese Weds Jodie Haydon in Secret Canberra Ceremony
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has married his partner, Jodie Haydon, in a private ceremony at The Lodge in Canberra, becoming the first sitting prime minister in the nation’s history to wed while in office.
The couple exchanged vows on Saturday afternoon, just a day after parliament concluded its final sitting for the year. In a short statement, Albanese said they were “absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends.”
The wedding was tightly kept under wraps for security reasons, with only close relatives and a select group of senior cabinet ministers attending. Among the guests were Haydon’s parents and Albanese’s son, Nathan.
Adding a charming touch, the prime minister’s dog, Toto, acted as the ring bearer. The newly married couple exited the ceremony to Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours),” with confetti tossed by guests. Albanese later posted a video capturing the moment.
During the reception, the couple shared their first dance to Frank Sinatra’s “The Way You Look Tonight.” Guests enjoyed custom beer cans printed with the same photo the couple used to announce their engagement.
Albanese, 62, and Haydon, 47, became engaged on Valentine’s Day last year. They first met in 2020 at a business dinner in Melbourne while he was opposition leader.
The pair will spend next week honeymooning within Australia, a scaled-down plan due to the prime minister’s re-election commitments.
