The Anambra State Police Command has called on its officers to strictly adhere to operational protocols to enhance service delivery and prevent incidents that could compromise security in the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, made this known in a statement issued on Wednesday in Awka.
According to Ikenga, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ikioye Orutugu, gave the charge during a condolence visit to the family of the late Inspector Amechi Okolie and officers of the Police Mobile Force 29 Squadron in Amansea, Awka.
The late Inspector Okolie was reportedly accidentally shot and killed by his 10-year-old son, who handled his AK-47 service rifle while he was on duty at a bank in Awka on June 15. His six-year-old son also sustained a gunshot injury during the incident.
Describing the Police Mobile Force as his alma mater, CP Orutugu reminded officers of the importance of adhering to police operational protocols, especially while on duty.
He also emphasised the need for teamwork and urged the personnel to remain focused and committed to their duties despite the recent tragedy.
Responding on behalf of the officers and men of the squadron, the Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Nasiru Kaila, expressed appreciation to the Commissioner for his show of empathy during the difficult period.
Kaila pledged to comply with the CP’s directives regarding the operations of the squadron and reaffirmed the commitment of his officers and men to their responsibilities.
He further assured that the squadron would continue working diligently to maintain peace and security in their jurisdiction.
The high point of the condolence visit was the presentation of a welfare support package by the CP to the family of the deceased and prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured child, who is currently receiving medical attention in the hospital.
