The Anambra Fire Service has issued a warning to residents to be more safety conscious during the harmattan period to prevent fire disasters that could result in loss of lives and property.
Mr Chukwudi Chiketa, Fire Chief of Anambra Fire Service, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Onitsha on Tuesday.
He stated that fire disasters were common in the state during the harmattan period.
To mitigate the risk of fire outbreaks, Chiketa advised residents to switch off electrical appliances when not in use to prevent electrical fires.
“Be cautious with open flames and ensure they are extinguished before leaving them unattended.
“Keep flammable materials away from heat sources,”he said.
Chiketa said the state fire service was conducting a sensitisation campaign to educate the public on fire safety and prevention.
He explained that the campaign targeted churches, mosques, parks, marketplaces, and other establishments.
He said in October, the state recorded three fire outbreaks, highlighting the importance of vigilance during the harmattan period.
“By taking proactive measures, residents can help prevent fire disasters and ensure a safer community.”
Chiketa also recommend taking general precautions during the harmattan season, such as, staying hydrated to avoid dehydration.
He further recommended the use of fog lights or low beams while driving to improve visibility, avoiding speeding and keeping a safe distance from other vehicles.
He said by being mindful of these precautions, residents could minimise the risks associated with the harmattan season.
