Anambra Government Shuts Down Unapproved School Over Pupil Bullying Incident
The Anambra State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Upcoming Star International School in Awka, following the alleged bullying of a seven-year-old pupil that resulted in a broken leg.
Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, the state Commissioner for Education, announced the decision on Tuesday after investigations revealed the school was operating without government approval. The incident reportedly occurred when a classmate bullied the pupil, leading to the injury.
“When the school proprietor, Mr. Uchechukwu Onyeachonam, was summoned for questioning, he admitted the incident happened on his premises, and it was further uncovered that the school had no approval to operate,” Chuma-Udeh explained.
Following this, Governor Chukwuma Soludo directed that the school be sealed before 2 p.m. on the same day. “The existence of illegal schools like this poses a grave risk to children in the state,” Chuma-Udeh added.
She also warned that proprietors of unapproved schools would face legal action and urged parents to avoid sending their children to such institutions.
