Students from St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu, Anambra State, have emerged overall winners of the first-ever UK-Nigeria Virtual Debate Championship.

The competition, held on Thursday, was jointly organised by Bring-It-On Africa and Debate Mate UK to promote cross-cultural dialogue and develop critical thinking, public speaking, and analytical skills among students from both nations.

Representing Nigeria in the virtual event were Britarch Schools, Sure Start School, Abuja; St. Augustine’s College, Jos; and St. John Vianney Science College, Anambra. The UK teams included Central Foundation Girls’ School, Maghull High School, and Shireland High School.

Following their victory, the wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, congratulated the students in a statement issued on Saturday in Awka. She praised them for flying the Anambra flag high on an international platform.

“This victory reflects the academic excellence and resilience Anambra is known for,” said Soludo, who is also the founder of the Healthy Living Initiative. “Our state continues to nurture talents through the abundant opportunities provided by the current administration.”

She further lauded the students for upholding the state’s educational ideals and recognized the efforts of their teachers and school management in supporting their development.

“To the staff and management of St. John Vianney Science College — thank you for investing in the students’ academic and personal growth. Your dedication is shaping future leaders,” she said.

Representing Anambra in the debate were Chibueze Jennifer, Catherine Obiokafor, Benjamin Eneoli, and Valentine Onwuegbusi, with Mr. John Onuigbo serving as their guide.

The UK-Nigeria Debate Championship aims to build global connections among young people while preparing them for leadership through the power of discourse.
