Archbishop Martins Urges End to Protests for Economic Stability

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Adewale Martins, on Saturday appealed for an end to nationwide protests to protect the economy.

In a statement signed by the Church’s Director of Social Communication, Rev. Fr. Anthony Godonu, Martins emphasized the economic risks of extending the protests beyond three days.

Acknowledging the widespread poverty and hunger, he noted that the protesters’ message had been clearly communicated. The Archbishop urged state actors to address the protesters’ demands promptly.

Martins also called on the Nigerian Police Force to exercise restraint and expressed regret over instances where the protests turned violent, resulting in loss of life.

“It is our right as citizens to protest peacefully, but this goal has now been achieved. The state of our economy should concern us all. To avoid further harm, it is wise to halt the protests and engage in dialogue with leaders to address our demands for a better Nigerian society,” he said.
