Argentine Man Embraces 40 Years of Cave Living in Tucumán Mountains

Pedro Luca, a 79-year-old Argentine, has spent the past four decades residing in a mountain cave in Tucumán Province, Argentina. Born and raised in San Pedro de Colalao, Luca left home at 14 to transport coal to Bolivia. Upon returning 40 years ago, he fulfilled his childhood dream of living amidst nature by settling in a grotto high in the mountains.

Luca’s daily routine begins at 3 a.m., sparked by the crowing of his roosters. He shares his cave with 11 chickens and two goats, which roam freely during the day and return at night for shelter from predators. Without modern amenities like electricity, gas, running water, or a telephone, Luca relies on an old battery-powered radio, though it seldom catches a signal in the mountains.

Every few days, Luca undertakes a three-hour trek to San Pedro de Colalao to collect his pension of around $100 and purchase supplies. The locals regard him as a living legend and welcome him warmly during his visits. Despite his isolated lifestyle, Luca receives visitors from around the world, including organized trips from local schools, all eager to meet the “modern-day caveman.”

Luca’s story offers a profound perspective on alternative lifestyles and the pursuit of personal fulfillment beyond the confines of conventional society.
