Artemis II Astronauts Set New Record for Farthest Human Journey from Earth

Astronauts aboard Artemis II have achieved a historic milestone, travelling farther from Earth than any humans before as they continue their journey around the Moon.

The four-member crew NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, alongside Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen reached a maximum distance of approximately 252,760 miles (406,600 km) from Earth on Monday. This surpasses the previous record set 56 years ago during the Apollo 13 mission.

Travelling aboard the Orion spacecraft, the crew is now navigating within the Moon’s gravitational sphere of influence and preparing to pass over its far side a region never visible from Earth.

The astronauts began their sixth day in space with a recorded message from the late Jim Lovell, commander of Apollo 13, who died last year at 97. In his message, Lovell welcomed the crew to his “old neighborhood” and encouraged them to take in the historic moment.

The milestone marks a key phase of the nearly 10-day mission the first crewed test flight under NASA’s Artemis programme, led by NASA. The initiative aims to return humans to the Moon by 2028 and establish a sustained presence there, with long-term ambitions of supporting future missions to Mars.

As the spacecraft swings around the Moon’s far side, the crew will experience temporary communication blackouts when the lunar body blocks signals to Earth. During the flyby, expected to last about six hours, astronauts will capture high-resolution images of the Moon and observe rare views of Earth appearing small against the vastness of space.

Scientists stationed at Johnson Space Center are closely monitoring the mission, analysing real-time observations from the crew to deepen understanding of the lunar environment.

The Artemis II mission represents a major step forward in human space exploration, offering both scientific insights and a preview of future deep-space travel beyond Earth’s orbit.
